Path Integration and Homing

Explore how persistent neural state can integrate self-motion and estimate a homeward direction when landmarks are limited.

Project background

Start with short-path heading estimation and study how rotation and translation signals accumulate in persistent neural state. Increase route length and noise gradually, recording drift and failure conditions rather than assuming spatial memory exists.

This project connects a defined neural-computation question to a reproducible evaluation protocol and a community participation pathway. Results will be interpreted only within their recorded model, task and evidence scope.

Training goals

  • Reduce heading-estimation and homing endpoint errors.
  • Measure error growth with route length.
  • Compare landmark-present and landmark-absent conditions.

Current foundation and milestones

Structural data and simulation are reusable. Repeatedly reset short experiments do not establish path memory or persistent-state navigation.

Next milestone: Freeze persistent-state and short-path heading benchmarks

Technical approach

Feed angular velocity and speed into a state-preserving model and read a heading estimate or homing vector. Ground-truth position is available only to scoring. An environment-provided home vector cannot replace neural computation. Persistent-state execution requires its own versioned rules.
